University of Reading

The Intelligent Systems Research (ISR) Laboratory operates as a multi-disciplinary research centre with a staff of around 20 Masters, Post-Doc and Professorial level research scientists, software engineers and project management staff at the School of Systems Engineering, University of Reading. ISR comprises 6 RTD teams: i) semantic-cognitive systems and human?robot/computer interaction, ii) multi?modal (multi)media information retrieval, semantic?media technologies, Open Linked Data, iii) FPGA-enabled hardware acceleration of algorithms for real-time systems, iv) computer network security & trustworthy Internet?of?Things (IoT) architectures, v) simulation and modelling, agent behaviours-risks modelling, intelligent information management, vi) virtual user and living laboratory based user-driven integrated requirements prioritisation and dynamic usability evaluation methodologies (UI-REF).  Recent projects at ISR have included Lab-on-Chip and sensor technologies for real-time adaptive systems exploiting FPGA and semantic integration as applied to network security intrusion, prevention and detection e.g. FASTMATCH), Smart Surveillance and Privacy- Aware Security (MOSAIC and VIDEOSENSE), Trustworthy Future Internet of People, Things & Services -IoPTS (authentication, security, privacy and trust modelling as in Mobi-PETS GRID), advanced personalisation, including of security-privacy requirements, accessibility design and profiling management, semantic technologies (ontological networks, virtualisation-agents-semantics), service-oriented architectures, behaviour and social-criminal networks modelling, image recognition, data mining, semantic workflow integration and decision support, smart transcoding for dynamic media adaptation, semantic parametric music representation and labelling, automated mood-responsive affective music composition, semantic-collateral media retrieval (DREAM, KAIFIA).

ROLE IN THE INTUITEL PROJECT

Due to complementary multi-disciplinary research of its 6 ISR subgroups, University of Reading provides invaluable expertise in several parts of the INTUITEL Project: Semantic Integration Technologies, Ontological Networks Engineering and Virtualisation, Learner Modelling and Mining. University of Reading’s experience in knowledge management justifies its leadership of dissemination and exploitation activities.
